Caroline “Linney” Calvin 1972–2016
Dayton, Ohio
Caroline Abigail Calvin passed away on January 21, 2016. Caroline was born on September 19, 1972, and grew up in Dayton, Ohio. She married her childhood sweetheart, Thomas Preston Calvin, a copyright attorney, in May of 2000. She worked as a pediatric nurse and was known for her bedside manner. Patients often commented on her kindness and willingness to sit and chat for a while. “She always had time for us,” a patient’s mother said.
Caroline dreamed of having a family and fulfilled that dream when she and Thomas adopted their daughter Penelope in 2005. After that, Caroline left her job as a nurse to raise Penny. Upon learning of her terminal cancer diagnosis, Thomas took a leave of absence from his job. The three traveled but spent most of their time with family, which was the most important thing to Caroline.
From Thomas: Caroline loved a well-done hamburger, making quilts, gardening, and poetry. She was also obsessed with bargain hunting—she never passed on a deal. But most of all, she loved our daughter, Penelope, who made her smile up until the very end. From the moment we adopted Penny, we instantly experienced more than a lifetime of love, at least that’s what Caroline always said. I can’t count the number of times she’d look at me and say, I’m so happy right now. In her last moments, Caroline assured me that her heart was full. With her final words, she wished for Penny and anyone else who mourns her to know that no matter what, love always returns.
