Chapter 15

Dear Mika,

Ten! Penny is ten, and I am pretty sure our little fourth-grader has one purpose in life, and that is to create chaos. Two months ago, she decided to walk everywhere backward. And now, most recently, she has decided to take up baking. Inspired, I’m sure, from watching The Great British Baking Show.

She sends Thomas to the store with lists of groceries, with dreams of whipping up all sorts of things—chocolate chess pie, pecan shortbread tea cakes, something called a caramel-apple skillet buckle? You name it, she wants to try it. Every afternoon, as soon as she gets home from school, she is preheating ovens and setting mixing bowls on the counter. She then leaves the sink piled high with dishes and the floor coated in flour. We critique what she makes as if we were on the show. It’s a nice bake, a little soft in the middle, but the presentation is excellent, and the flavor is good. I have to admit, Penny is a terrible baker. But we eat whatever she makes and smile so wide our cheeks hurt. But what can I say? I am a sucker for Penny. I always want her to follow her dreams. Pic of her most recent creation included. I think it was supposed to be a hedgehog cake?

Big hugs,

Caroline
