14 Charles James Fox (1749–1806), rival of William Pitt (see note for p. 361, l. 31) and leader of the opposition Whig party in the House of Commons and then the House of Lords. He supported both the American and— early on—French revolutions and sought a rapprochement with Bonaparte until 1804, when he became persuaded of the new emperor's dangerous ambitions.
